Juried Prizes Slide Show

With Thanks to our Juror Mark Fernandez

First Place

Gary Graham, Late Afternoon at Colt

watercolor, $$325

Juror’s Comments:

I was immediately drawn to this watercolor when I walked into the show. There is very aggressive value range. Which leads the viewer into the shadows and then too the back ground trees in the distance. The painting has great composition, the longer you study the painting the more the subtlety of the brush works is apparent.

Second Place

Marc Jaffe, Coastal Afternoon

Photograph, $350

Juror’s Comments:

This photograph captures beautifully the early or late day light of the New England coast. One of the compositional things I find interesting the photographer has the horizon line in the middle of the image. Usually that is an image killer, but it works here. The weight of the rocks moves your eyes from right to left and then the clouds take the viewer from left to right. Great job in pulling off what not to do, very dynamic image!

Third Place

Erin Howe, Camp #10

Acrylic, $250

Juror’s Comments:

This painting I think of as a dreamscape. The painting leaves the viewer with mystery of what is the image saying. There three very different elements in the image with hardedge building connecting the foreground and background together. I kept coming back to this painting and found it captivating.

Honorable Mention

William Bowers, Waterlilies

Acrylic, $400

Juror’s Comments:

There is a enduring simplicity to this painting, that reminds me of a 19 century sampler. It has a very strong graphic design. The dark background is sweetly contrasted with the hot pink lilies.

Honorable Mention

Amy Bartlett Wright, Where We Live, Common Fence Point

Oil, $450

Juror’s Comments:

This oil painting has great brushwork, solid composition, great use of color. All the elements that make a strong painting.

Honorable Mention

Jim Estes, Jamestown – West Passage

Watercolor, $200

Juror’s Comments:

This long horizontal watercolor painting shows the subtle effects artists can achieve with washes. The atmospheric effect in the sky recreates the feeling of fog burning off or the sky clearing. Quintessential New England harbor.
