Three day plein air workshop!  The Portsmouth Arts Guild is proud to offer another plein air workshop with this wildly popular duo. Sam Allerton Green and Bill Lane teach together during their workshops. They both start with a demo of the same scene so that students can witness and learn from their process on identical subjects. Sam will paint in oils and Bill in watercolors.  The painting locations will be on or near Aquidneck Island and will be determined prior to each class.  All levels are welcome, but you should have some plein air experience under your belt.

How each day will progress: The intro and demo will begin promptly at 9:00am on location and should finish around 10:45-11:00. Students will then paint at the same general location and pick a scene that speaks to them. Sam and Bill will visit each student throughout the day to answer any questions and provide suggestions and guidance. Around 3:15pm students will gather with their pieces – finished or not- for an informal crit. The crit usually lasts until 4:30ish depending on the class size. Students should grab lunch on their own schedule.

“I grew up in Providence, Rhode Island, and studied painting at the Maryland Institute College of art and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. I have been an Artist in Residence at numerous residencies around the country. I paint often, both inside and outside. Much of my work is done En Plein Air, on site, in a single session. This forces me to focus on capturing what it feels like to be there, rather than simply replicating what I see. I spend so much of my time trying to swindle the natural world into showing me what is most important. Some days I’m convinced that observing this earth in the snow, rain, late at night or early in the morning will reveal something new to me. That if I park my easel in blazing sun just steps away from a shady grove, I will see something else. Something more, and I’ll be ready to record it. Brush in hand, like I am some paparazzi for mother earth.”

“Everyday scenes intrigue me the most; be it a barren landscape, boats in the harbor or city life on a busy day. I observe how the light plays into the scene and reflects off the subjects. I work to capture that light while enhancing my point-of-interest in the painting.”
