PAG Plein Air

By stepping outside, you can discover new inspirations and enjoy fresh perspectives. The Guild organizes free Tuesday afternoon sessions giving members and guests a wonderful opportunity to explore creativity outdoors in a relaxed atmosphere. We welcome all experience levels and we truly want you to come and give this a try. We all had to start somewhere!

The challenge is working in a short window of time with changing weather and light. Clouds don’t stop moving and the shadows move with the sun. So Plein Air is a wonderful opportunity to learn to quickly get down the essentials. All while managing your materials and equipment.

We meet at a designated location mid-afternoon and make art for about 2 hours. We finish with a short “Show of Work” where we get a chance to look at each other’s work and draw inspiration for next time. There is no formal instruction. However, if asked, fellow artists will offer gentle and friendly encouragement and advice!

After – take your work back home to finish or use as a reference sketch for a finished painting.

Bristol Ferry Road, Portsmouth

SEP 8, 5–7PM

Located at the northern end of Bristol Ferry Road at Bayview Avenue, the Bristol Ferry Town Common was established on March 12, 1714, by the Portsmouth Town Committee. This 1.5-acre space was originally used by farmers and others to keep their livestock and other goods while waiting for the ferry to Bristol. This historic common is currently maintained as a public park, with great views of Mount Hope Bay. Enjoy the views as you paint at this well kept Portsmouth secret spot.

Fort Wetherill State Park, Jamestown

AUG 25, 5–7PM

Across the bay from Newport’s Fort Adams, Fort Wetherill is a former coastal defense battery and training camp. On the left side of the most Eastern access road, we have a view of Newport Harbor. On the right, an inlet with large granite outcroppings and a tidal cove. At the Southern point, we can see the mouth of Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. There is an easy parking area at the center of all three of these. Look for the flag!

Stone Bridge & Teddy's Beach, Portsmouth

AUG 18, 5–7PM

Today we’re painting at Stone Bridge and Teddy’s Beach in Portsmouth. The public lot was once the road that took drivers across Stone Bridge. The Bridge no longer crosses over, but there is a section for fishing.

Teddy’s Beach is the crescent shaped shoreline adjacent to Stone Bridge. Look out to Tiverton Harbor with boats and historic homes to the East.

Up Point Road just a bit is a small bridge that overlooks Blue Bill Cove with gorgeous views looking West.

Colt State Park, Bristol

AUG 11, 5–7PM

Often referred to as the gem of our State Parks System, Colt State Park offers panoramic view of Narragansett Bay, hiking trails, miles of paved bike paths and open fields. Boasting 464 acres, the entire western edge borders on open waters of the bay.

Take the loop around to the car park next to Chapel by the Sea. This is next to a working restroom, and it is central to all the views. The building is a great subject, as are the mature trees and stonewall lined roadways. We can see Narragansett Bay and distant views of the marsh and stone bridge nearby. As the sun gets low, deer come out to graze along forest edges

MAPColt Drive, Bristol, RI

Middletown Valley Park

AUG 4, 5–7PM

Valley Park is a large open space of more than 40 acres, designed with plantings and winding walking trails. The landscape design consists of planting beds with islands of trees among natural vegetation. For many years a tree and shrub nursery, it’s now a public park with walking trails and views of the valley with a tributary that leads to Easton’s Pond, Newport. Beyond that is First Beach. Maybe we will spy a view of the pond. Leashed dogs are welcome.

Ballard Park Preserve, Newport

Formerly a quarry that supplied the granite for many of the Newport mansions. Now a 75-acre woodland park and nature preserve, with trails, wildlife, granite boulders, ravines, red swamp maples and quaking aspens.

Coastal neighborhood with boats, beaches, marshes, creeks, even some small waterfalls.

Beavertail State Park, Jamestown

Beavertail offers some of the most beautiful vistas along the New England coastline. Paint this pristine landscape from one of four overlooks, walk the rocky coastline, or feature the third-oldest lighthouse in America.
