The Sky’s the Limit!

Elevating the Painted Landscape using Clouds – A Community Event

Artists can miss opportunities to add visual interest to their landscape paintings by concentrating on ground and overlooking what’s above. In this fun and motivating two day workshop we’ll have our eyes to the skies! Our goal will be to explore adding dynamism and compositional energy to the painted landscape through the use of bold skies and colorful clouds. Begin by exploring how to paint various cloud formations and ways they could be used to enhance an otherwise flat sky. We’ll use a simple landscape base as catalyst and compose and create a finished landscape (or two) which becomes much more engaging and interesting by adding clouds. Open to all levels with at least a bit of experience. Acrylics may be used but oil paints are preferred.

We are delighted to offer this workshop as a Community Event.  Our community programs highlight the talents of local and regional artists through inspiring interactive events thanks to the generous sponsorship of Clements Market, the Town of Portsmouth and The Portsmouth Arts Guild community event sponsors.

Rick Shiers

Rick Shiers has been a professional freelance illustrator, painter and art educator since graduating Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in 1988. He’s has taught painting and illustration to children, adolescents and adults through classes and workshops (with over ten combined years of teaching in the RISD CE program). He strives to share his wisdom as an educator, hoping to advance fellow artists with a collaborative, nurturing and lighthearted approach to instruction. Comfortable in most media, his personal exploration in fine art painting includes oils, watercolors, gouache and acrylics. Subject matter varies by whim, but representational landscapes and still life dominate the repertoire. Although stylistically diverse, his current paintings emphasize dynamic impressionism and bold brushwork.
