Confident Color: Mixing Brights & Neutrals

Judy Vilmain

Maybe you are tired of your paintings looking muddy, and could use some help with color mixing, or maybe you need a push to use color in a more creative way.

This workshop will cover just enough Color Theory to help you mix clean, brilliant colors as well as beautiful neutrals — no more muddy mixtures or too-garish colors. You CAN learn to mix the color you want every time!

We will cover the benefits of working with a Double-Primary Palette, and you will get lots of practice mixing and matching colors. You’ll explore Complementary Colors and all the luscious chromatic grays you can achieve with them. We will cover how to mix shadow colors easily. And you’ll learn to mix a wide variety of your own rich darks. On the final afternoon you will paint an ode to your favorite pair of colors.

This workshop is open to representational painters working in any medium, from advanced beginners and up.

Judy Vilmain is a Psychologist and painter living in Providence, Rhode Island, and is an Exhibiting Artist Member of the Providence Art Club. Her work includes intimate outdoor scenes and still-life paintings.

“With the objects I choose, and the way in which I paint them, I’m trying to present a world that feels familiar, solid, and grounded, hopefully providing the viewer a quiet break from the chaos.

Regardless of the subject matter, I’m always considering the formal aspects of a painting: color, line, shape, and surface texture. Using these, I work towards a level of realism that still shows the hand of the painter — I want the viewer to keep moving back and forth between seeing the three-dimensional objects and seeing the paint and brushstrokes that created the illusion.

That back and forth is what I find magical in a painting.”
