Painting Outside
Bill Lane
Sam Allerton Green
This fall enjoy 2 days of plein air painting on (or near) gorgeous Aquidneck Island with Bill and Sam.
Each day will start at 9am sharp with an on-site demo at the designated location. Bill and Sam will paint the same scene; Sam with oils and Bill with watercolors. They will talk about the chosen scene and why, how they plan the composition and determine the values. After which you’ll head off to paint at a nearby location of your choice. Bill and Sam will walk around providing individual attention throughout the day. We’ll have an informal group crit on location around 3:30pm and wrap up around 4pm.
During this 2-day workshop we’ll cover:
- Equipment
- Location scouting
- Determining a potentially successful scene with focus on composition, focal point and a creating a “story” in your painting
- Learning to be mindful of your surrounding area
- Dealing with the elements, which change constantly – and more!
Locations will be announced prior to each day and maps will be provided.
We will paint in almost any weather: rain, heatwave, pea soup fog… The only exception would be a severe and dangerous weather event such as a hurricane or flood, in which case we’ll cancel. If that happens we will attempt to find a suitable alternate date.
Plan to bring your own water, lunch and snacks. Dress for the weather and don’t forget sun block and bug spray. If you have questions about gear please contact us and we’ll put you in touch with one of the instructors.

Sam Allerton Green
“I grew up in Providence, Rhode Island, and studied painting at the Maryland Institute College of art and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. I have been an Artist in Residence at numerous residencies around the country. I paint often, both inside and outside. Much of my work is done En Plein Air, on site, in a single session. This forces me to focus on capturing what it feels like to be there, rather than simply replicating what I see. I spend so much of my time trying to swindle the natural world into showing me what is most important. Some days I’m convinced that observing this earth in the snow, rain, late at night or early in the morning will reveal something new to me. That if I park my easel in blazing sun just steps away from a shady grove, I will see something else. Something more, and I’ll be ready to record it. Brush in hand, like I am some paparazzi for mother earth.”
