Jossy Lownes

Painting is my passion. Teaching is my pleasure; to share my knowledge gives me a great reward. Every class has a focus on a specific concept like composition, values, or color. We want to explore, relax, and develop our own personal style and we will focus on “planning your painting” by doing some values sketches. Please bring felt markers in light gray, medium gray and black.

Guided by Jossy’s expertise, you’ll work from inspiring photos to master the art of simplifying space, infusing emotion, and experimenting boldly with color. Whether you’re refining your skills or pushing artistic boundaries, this is your chance to create striking paintings that leave a lasting impression. Let’s make your artistic journey extraordinary!

Artists are welcome to work in any painting medium. Bring an assortment of brushes and any other tools you may have on hand: palette knives, scrapers, rollers, etc.

Other suggested materials:

  • Paint – your usual colors
  • Supports: canvas boards, panels, oil paper taped down – at least 16″ x 20″ (you’ll need 2-4)
  • Freezer paper works well as a palette
  • Sketchbook, pen and pencil

Jossy Lownes

Jossy Lownes has been a professional artist for the past 30 years. Painting and teaching currently occupy most of her time here in Rhode Island.

Jossy says, “Education is so important to me! Having been a teacher for the last 30 years, I realize we all learn from each other. My class is devoted to demonstrating each idea, and giving individual attention to each person. My class is about helping people to get to the next level no matter where they are right now.”

With a bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University and a Masters from the University of Illinois, Jossy has an amazing array of awards and accolades. She is a juried member of the Providence Art Club.
