Exploring Gouache

Gouache is opaque watercolor that dries to a velvety matte finish, is often a bit more forgiving than watercolor and is a very “transportable” medium, ideal for sketching and painting on the go.

Have you been wanting to try gouache but didn’t know where to begin or didn’t want to deal with the smell of oil paints, or want to pay for more art supplies that you may not use again? This workshop is for you!

This is a foundations class where you’ll learn skills needed to begin painting with gouache. Get to know the materials and essential methods. Explore the importance of value, color, and composition through demonstration, group discussion, and plenty of individual attention. Plus, you’ll get to spend some quality time painting in a relaxed and encouraging environment.

Beginners as well as intermediate painters, high school age and above, are all welcome.

Mark Fernandez

Mark is a New England painter following a long line of artists trying to capture the beauty found along the rugged coast, mountains, and coastal towns of the region. His painting challenge is trying to capture the way light transforms the spectacular and the ordinary into something stunning. He will also work in his studio/ gallery on paintings using his plein air paintings, sketches, and photos for reference.  His gouache painting, Trunk Bay, was awarded 2nd Place in the Journeys and Destinations exhibit at the Guild by juror Bill McLane.

Mark is primarily a self taught painter but he has received instruction in workshops and night classes from painters David Lussier, Randall Sexton, John MacGowan, Jill Carver, and Colley Whisson among others.  He also has a background in the Jewelry Industry and BFA in ceramics in 1976 from Coe College.

This workshop runs on Monday and Tuesday, July 27 and 28, from 10:0am to 2:00pm.
