In this workshop, students will learn to better master colored pencils with techniques for layering, blending colors and burnishing techniques.

Techniques and principles needed for working skillfully with colored pencils such as selecting and layering colors, burnishing, blending and creating rich darks and vibrant colors will be covered. We will talk about working with values, creating texture and using different papers and boards. All levels of skill are welcome, some prior drawing experience is recommended.

Materials List*

  • Set of at least 48 colored pencils I recommend Prismacolor Premier as they are the easiest to work with. However, larger sets of pencils are better for a good variety of color. Students may choose to bring another brand especially if they already own some.
  • White or off white drawing paper such as Legion Stonehenge, Strathmore Drawing Paper (300, 400 or 500 series), any brand Bristol Vellum Surface (not smooth surface Bristol). Can be individual sheets or pad, we won’t work larger than 11×14”.
  • Small sketch pad for thumbnails or trying out colors. Doesn’t have to be new, can be something students already own
  • Standard lead pencil
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Pencil sharpener; handheld or battery operated
  • Ruler

*Kendra has materials you can borrow for this workshop, please contact her at kjfdesign13@gmail.com if you would like to do so.

Kendra will supply the paper/surface we will be working on, still life objects, handouts, extra supplies.

Kendra Ferreira, Portsmouth Arts Guild Workshop

Kendra has always loved drawing and chose colored pencil as her primary medium. She enjoys taking ordinary subjects and compositions and portraying them in an extraordinary way. Colored pencils permit her to combine the expressiveness of painting with the control of drawing. She uses color, line, value, shape and light to portray emotion and seek to draw the viewer into the canvas.

Kendra is a signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America in two areas, holding a second signature membership in the exploration of using other mediums and surfaces with colored pencil. She is also an elected member of Providence Art Club, Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, NYC, American Artists’ Professional League, NYC and 19 on Paper. Her work has been included in many national and international art exhibitions and she is fortunate to be a recipient of numerous awards for her work.

A few years ago Kendra was excited to have the opportunity to write a book about drawing with colored pencil titled Colour Pencil Drawing: Techniques and Tutorials for the Complete Beginner and she is also a collaborating author in Drawing & Painting Techniques and Tutorials for the Complete Beginner both published by GMC Book of London.
